Like many places, I ended up at Sweetpea two different times when I was in Portland recently. The first time I split an assortment of desserts with a group of folks, sampling a big snickerdoodle, a pretty little fruit tart, a vanilla cupcake with dreamy looking frosting, and a heavenly slice of chocolate silk pie (my favorite for sure). We arrived later in the afternoon, so unfortunately most of their case was empty by that time. Learning from that experience, I got there earlier when I went again by myself a couple of days later, and triumphantly snagged one of their savory filled croissants. Before I went vegan I worked in a French patisserie, so I’m always on the lookout for a solid vegan croissant. The croissant from Sweetpea was really good– not too oily, and was flaky like I hoped it would be. The filling was bbq soy curls with greens, and the bbq sauce had a sweetness that complimented the pastry. I’d love to go back and try their sweet-filled croissants, scones, and other things I couldn’t budget time or room in my belly for the first (and second!) time around. They also have food menus I’d like to try out at some point.
I was really excited to try out Sweetpea, but compared to the other bakeries in Portland I found it to be pretty average. They use A LOT of Earth Balance (vegan margarine) in their baked goods, and they’re almost too rich for my liking. To be fair, I had visited on a weekend after they were sold out of a lot of things so the choices weren’t as great. I will have to give this place another try for some savory items like a croissant, quiche, or one of their many sandwiches.
