We tried a wide variety of small dishes from King’s Cafe to share as a group, and overall it was a tasty stop for some vegan Chinese food. Everything was seasoned well, and even though we ate a lot and it didn’t feel super healthy, I also didn’t feel weighed down after we left. My favorite things we tried were the BBQ Buns, the Croquettes, and the Fried Green Tea Buns which had a pleasant floral note. I also was pleasantly surprised by the seitan platter– it was super light, the texture was soft, and the different flavors were all distinct and delicious. I wish the wonton soup had a different broth, that would have taken the meal over the top for me, but nevertheless King’s Cafe is worth a visit. They also have a small grocery inside where you can find dry goods, shelf-stable items, and refrigerated and frozen items to take home and prepare yourself.
Having had a cold while visiting Toronto, I was happy to find that King’s Cafe offered a vegan Hot & Sour Soup that really hit the spot. Also here they had really good soy nuggets, BBQ buns, Croquettes, and various seitan dishes. Almost everything on the menu is vegan but they do clearly label some things that cannot be made vegan. The menu is very extensive and it’s hard to choose just one thing, so I definitely recommend coming here with a group and splitting some things.
I would probably come back to King’s Cafe again because it’s in such a convenient location in Kensington Market and service seemed great while we were there. I wish I had brought home some vegan mochi or some other goods from their store, but I was short on suitcase room. It looked like they had a great selection of items if you did want to find something unique to bring home, though!
