2 Reviews on “Charlie Was a Sinner”
Charlie was a sinner was not at all what I expected it to be. I thought I was headed to a good old fashioned Philly pub for a burger and a local version of coke. Instead, when I arrived, I found myself extremely under dressed, embarrassed that I hadn’t made a reservation, and yet greeted with the same respect as anyone else. The place is fancy and hip and cool and busy as all get out. We had to sit at the bar, which was fine by us, and they let us check our heavy backpacks at the front. The entire menu was vegan, including the drinks. My sister-in-law got a drink that incorporated something quite a bit like Bailey’s, but made in-house and made vegan. She seemed to like it a lot. While it was definitely out of our anticipated price range and the portions were really really small, it was still a good experience. It was AN EXPERIENCE, if you catch my drift. We liked it so much I’ve decided to head back to Philly when I turn 21 and get myself some special vegan cocktails. It was really fun watching the incredibly skilled bar tender!
I’ve been wanting to check out Charlie was a Sinner for a while now, and I’m so glad I got to on my latest trip to Philly! I had made a reservation a few weeks in advance, although you are still likely to find a spot without a reservation during their less-busy hours.
Charlie was a little crowded in the dining area my partner and I were seated in, but it didn’t feel too cramped. Be aware that it is VERY dark in this restaurant, but the ambience with candles scattered around and a projector on the main wall made the experience a little more fun. The main thing I didn’t like about the ambience was the loudness, but it could’ve been because the people around us were talking and laughing a little too loudly.
Between the two of us, we ordered a mocktail (which was tasty) 6 plates: 2 snacks, 2 iterations, and 2 solo. Our favorite dishes would have to be the Artichoke Frites, Caramelized Onion Bao Buns, and the Korean Style Fried Tofu. I appreciate the fact that the servers first mention that everything on the menu is “vegan”. without you having to ask. Also, the majority of the menu is vegetable-based with just a couple of tofu dishes. I wouldn’t say that it’s super healthy because there are a few fried dishes and heavy sauces, but the portions are pretty small when you’re splitting them with one or more people.
My only main regret is not ordering dessert, but we were stuffed after ordering 6 plates split between the two of us. If I get the chance to come back here I would definitely try to pace myself a little better!
