Smaaken is Dutch for TASTY!
Our waffles use organic, heirloom varietal wheat grown by
Greenwillow Grains in Corvallis, OR. It takes 24 hours for our
yeasted and barley malted batter to develop its exquisite flavor.
Thin and crispy, these healthy waffles are the perfect vessel for
our locally sourced and house-made fillings. All sandwiches
are made with round, 7in folded waffles and vegan batter is available.

I want to eat at this place every time I come to Portland! They have a whole vegan section on their menu plus many items can be veganized with a different batter and coconut whipped cream/other toppings. Whether you like sweet or savory waffles, you’ll love the selection of stuff here. My favorite was the veganized Dutch Baby and the Vegan Maple. As a bonus, this food cart is located by a few other places with good vegan options!
When we first walked by Smaaken, I didn’t give it a second thought because I assumed there were no vegan options. Imagine how thrilled I was when a friend showing us around town casually mentioned that they have a solid amount of vegan items on the menu! There is a shorter menu of waffle sandwiches that already come prepared vegan, and an even larger list of options that can be made vegan upon request. An actual paradise of vegan waffle-y goodness.
Our group of three split four waffle sandwiches. We opted for two savory and two sweet options for ~balance~. My favorites were hands down the sweet ones– one had apples, vegan whipped cream and vegan caramel, and the other had vegan chocolate ganache, the same whipped cream and raspberries! The quality of everything was great, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different and very satisfying.
