The first vegan restaurant to remain open in Istanbul, Turkey specializing in vegan sweets and traditional Turkish foods. It’s located in the neighborhood of Kadiköy which is slowly becoming a “hip” more gentrified neighborhood. It’s not far from the waterfront and just a block away is CafeMU which offers a few vegan snacks and has vegan mocha lattes.

1 Review on “Mahatma Cafe”
I *loved* visiting this restaurant. It’s one of just a couple fully vegan establishments in the huge city of Istanbul, Turkey.
They serve traditional Turkish foods (think Mediterranean style meals) but are also known for their sweets/cakes/desserts.
The owner opened the restaurant two years ago because he was having trouble finding good vegan food in Istanbul. He explained that it has become a passion project for him; even if we did have to call him to open for us since he did not show up to open for his normally scheduled business hours. Eep! But he was very nice and excited to talk about veganism.
The restaurant is located in a very old neighborhood near the waterfront. It’s becoming a bit gentrified so there is a neat mix of super old rundown building set against some hipster-esque hangouts and coffee shops.
Speaking of which, there is a coffee shop just one block from this restaurant called CafeMU. they serve a few vegan foods and offer vegan mocha lattes!
