Bunner’s Bakeshop was started by Ashley Wittig and Kevin MacAllister – two entrepreneurs who saw the need in Toronto for a bakery that caters to those with food sensitivities and allergies AND tastes just like traditional baked goods. No compromises.
After a summer of testing Ash’s creations at a local farmer’s market and watching their fan base grow by the week, they started looking for a bricks and mortar location. With a shoe-string budget, some first class haggling over rent and equipment, and a whole lot of moxy and elbow grease they opened their first retail location on Dec. 11 2010.
Once it got out that you could buy piping hot GF & V bread, cinnamon buns and muffins baked fresh daily, customers took it upon themselves to spread the word and Bunner’s grew from a few friends to a big family.
Bunner’s currently has two retail locations, a cook book published by Harper Collins in Canada and the USA, and employs a staff of more then 20 of the most awesome bakers and customer service reps you’ll ever meet!

2 Reviews on “Bunner's Bake Shop - Kensington Market”
Bunner’s was a quick stop during our group’s time spent in Kensington Market. It’s a pretty small shop with minimal seating, but it seems that most customers who were also in the shop were just taking things to go (which is what we did). We ordered a couple butter tarts (which were so delicious), a chocolate/red velvet whoopie pie, and a Caramelita bar which ended up being one of my favorite treats from Toronto!
Everything here is vegan and gluten-free so it’s a great place to bring any of your vegan and/or celiac friends. I don’t actually mind the texture or taste of gluten-free treats, but if you do it might not be your cup of tea. Personally, I would still definitely stop by here again on my next trip to Toronto!
So I’m the goof that didn’t get any actual photos of the treats we picked up from Bunner’s, which is a shame because the Caramelita bar we got was hands down one of the most delicious bakery treats we sampled on our excursion in Kensington Market and beyond that day. We also got their vegan Butter Tarts, a Canadian speciality I was told, and the love and care they put into making the mini tart shells by hand was evident in every bite. We also got one of their red velvet, chocolate enrobed whoopie pies, and it was decadent and so good. Whether you’re gluten free or gluten-full, this bakery is ready to treat you right.
