United States Vegan Activities including Attractions & Vegan Shopping
In addition to activities specifically created for us vegans like vegan surf camps, vegan yoga retreats, and vegan tours, many of the activities we vegans enjoy doing while traveling abroad, as well as in our home towns, often reflect out compassionate outlook on life. For example, most vegans would never go to a zoo or aquatic park, but we would happily visit national parks and protected conservation areas.
Attractions we vegans enjoy
What attractions do we vegans like going to when we are traveling? Most vegans would love going to protected nature conservation areas like the Galápagos Islands where we can see undisturbed nature and animals roaming freely in their natural habitats. Learn which attractions your fellow vegans enjoy going to when they are traveling and those attractions local vegans would recommend for visitors to their own hometowns. And please share the attractions you’ve most enjoyed visiting, both while traveling abroad and in the region you live. Some attractions examples include the landmarks, museums, and national parks and conservation areas you and your fellow vegans really enjoyed on your holiday travels. And for those facilities that have cafeterias or provide meals, please also review the vegan meal options they offer. With your help, and the help of our vegan community, this page can truly reflect the attractions we vegans most enjoy visiting.

Covering half a city block of indoor and outdoor space, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens glisten with creativity and urban renaissance. Artist Isaiah Zagar began tiling South Street in the 1960’s and never stopped, eventually building a mosaic garden out of ceramic shards, broken mirrors, bicycle spokes, and vivid splashes of dyed cement. The tiled passages of the Magic Garden weave over and under ground, and perhaps more than anything through the mind of a dedicated and obsessed artist.

Philadelphia City Hall, located at 1 Penn Square, is the seat of government for the city of Philadelphia, in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. At 548ft, including the statue of city founder William Penn atop it, it was the tallest habitable building in the world from 1894 to 1908. It remained the tallest in Pennsylvania until it was surpassed in 1932 by the Gulf Tower in Pittsburgh; it was the tallest in Philadelphia until the construction of One Liberty Place (1984–87) ended the informal gentlemen’s agreement that limited the height of buildings in the city. Today, it is the state’s 16th-tallest building.City Hall has been the world’s tallest masonry building since at least the 1953 collapse of the pinnacle of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin. Its weight is borne by granite and brick walls up to 22ft thick. The principal exterior materials are limestone, granite, and marble. In 2007, the building was voted #21 on the American Institute of Architects’ list of Americans’ 150 favorite U.S. structures.

The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American independence, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formerly placed in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House (now renamed Independence Hall), the bell today is located in the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park. The bell was commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack (today the Whitechapel Bell Foundry) in 1752, and was cast with the lettering “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof,” a Biblical reference from the Book of Leviticus (25:10). The bell first cracked when rung after its arrival in Philadelphia, and was twice recast by local workmen John Pass and John Stow, whose last names appear on the bell. In its early years, the Liberty Bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meetings and proclamations. No immediate announcement was made of the Second Continental Congress’s vote for independence, and thus the bell could not have rung on July 4, 1776, at least not for any reason related to that vote. Bells were rung to mark the reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776, and while there is no contemporary account of the Liberty Bell ringing, most historians believe it was one of the bells rung. After American independence was secured, it fell into relative obscurity for some years. In the 1830s, the bell was adopted as a symbol by abolitionist societies, who dubbed it the “Liberty Bell.”

Independence Hall is where both the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted. It is now the centerpiece of the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The building was completed in 1753 as the colonial legislature (later Pennsylvania State House) for the Province of Pennsylvania. It became the principal meeting place of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783 and was the site of the Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787.A convention held in Independence Hall in 1915, presided over by former US president William Howard Taft, marked the formal announcement of the formation of the League to Enforce Peace, which led to the League of Nations and eventually the United Nations. The building is part of Independence National Historical Park and is listed as a World Heritage Site.Preparation for constructionBy the spring of 1729 the citizens of Philadelphia were petitioning to be allowed to build a state house. Two thousand pounds were committed to the endeavor. A committee composed of Thomas Lawrence, Dr. John Kearsley, and Andrew Hamilton was charged with the responsibility of selecting a site for construction, acquiring plans for the building, and contracting a company for the purpose of construction. Hamilton and William Allen were named trustees of the purchasing and building fund and authorized to buy the land that would be the site of the state house. By October 1730 they had begun purchasing lots on Chestnut Street.

The Powel House is a historic house museum located at 244 South 3rd Street, between Willings Alley and Spruce Street, in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built in 1765 in the Georgian style, and embellished by second owner Samuel Powel (1738 – 1793), it has been called “the finest Georgian row house in the city.” As with other houses of this type, the exterior facade was, but the interior was elaborately appointed.HistoryThe elegant brick city house was built for Charles Stedman, a merchant and shipmaster. Before he had the chance to live in it, Stedman fell into financial trouble – eventually winding up in debtors’ prison. The house was purchased for £3,150 on August 2, 1769 by Samuel Powel, who would become the last mayor of Philadelphia under British rule and the city’s first mayor following independence. A Quaker who converted to Anglicanism, he supported the American Revolution and was dubbed the “Patriot Mayor.”The building is attributed to architect/builder Robert Smith. Powel and his wife Elizabeth (née Willing) lavishly redecorated, creating some of the most ornate interiors in the Colonies. The Rococo plastered ceilings are attributed to James Clow, and the architectural woodwork is attributed to carvers Hercules Courtnay and Martin Jugiez.

Meet your neighborhood NY cheese shop…one that doesn’t depend on dairy! Perfectly situated in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights, Riverdel carries the largest selection of vegan cheeses imaginable. Our specialty foods, fresh bread, and pastries offer plenty of inspiration for putting together the perfect meal or creating an irresistible cheese plate. As the only vegan cheese shop in the US that showcases carefully curated product lines from all over the country, Riverdel is the first of its kind. We stock a wide variety of gourmet vegan foods — everything from caviar and bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup to non-dairy yogurts and nut milks — and also craft our very own in-house cheeses. Don’t forget to sample our made-to-order sandwiches! Stop by and grab lunch on the go or a pack a picnic for a leisurely day at the park. Riverdel owner and shopkeeper, Michaela Grob, can relate to a craving for exceptional dairy-free cheese. Once she realized there wasn’t a single shop in New York that offered a wide range of all-vegan cheeses, she decided to launch one herself…and Riverdel sprang to life! Combining the names of her two companion animals, River, a rescue dog and Fidel, a shelter cat, seemed fitting for a store featuring 100% cruelty-free foods. Michaela adds, “If people visit the shop, find a new cheese they love, and see just how many delicious choices are out there, I’ll know I’ve done my job.”

It was The Ides of March, March 15th of 1969, when Don MacLeod, his wife Loreen and brother in law Dan Lissy first opened an 800 square foot record store on the corner of 32nd & East Burnside. Specializing in mostly underground music not found in the department stores, drugstores or the couple of record stores which existed at the time, Music Millennium filled a niche for the Portland, OR music community. Titles by Fairport Convention, Frank Zappa, John Fahey, The Fugs and Holy Modal Rounders were stocked in the small store along with the sounds heard on the then three month old FM station, KINK- The Underground Link. The store quickly grew in the first five years to its current size, including the addition of a classical store called The Musical Offering, later known as Classical Millennium (closed in 2012). A second Music Millennium store was also added next to the now defunct Purple Earth Tavern at NW 21st & Irving, later located at 23rd & Johnson. It’s over 40 years later and Music Millennium is the oldest record store in existence in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout our history, we’ve stocked the ever-evolving gamut of formats including LP, 45, reel-to-reel, 8-track, cassette, DAT, compact disc, mini-disc, DCC and CD-ROM. As people who know and love music, Music Millennium has hosted an array of in-store performances and autograph appearances over the years, including the likes of Richard Thompson, Luscious Jackson, Loreena McKennitt, Maureen McCormick (aka “Marcia Brady”), Blue Rodeo, Shonen Knife, Matthew Sweet, Soundgarden, Mike Watt, Don Walser, Sheryl Crow, Randy Newman, Everclear, Jewel, Little Feat, Susannah Hoffs and Cheap Trick to name a few. Be sure to check out our current calendar of events! You can visit Portland’s homegrown music store at 3158 E. Burnside (at 32nd). See you there!

Enzian exists to entertain, inspire, educate, and connect the community through film. Surrounded by weeping oaks, a bubbling fountain, and a beautiful courtyard, Enzian is a unique movie-going experience. For more than 25 years, Enzian has championed the belief that “Film Is Art.” Along with first-run independent features, Enzian offers a variety of special events, such as the nationally-recognized Florida Film Festival. Founded by Tina Tiedtke and the Tiedtke family in 1985, Enzian began as a repertory house offering six to 12 classic films each week as well as the occasional live show (musician Philip Glass was one of the most notable bookings on Enzian’s stage). By 1989, Enzian refocused and moved into the then-risky field of showing first-run independent features. Enzian was alone in the community in booking such films, but this bold transformation was a success. With strong support from regional film-lovers, Enzian now often reports the highest grosses in Florida for many art house releases. Adventurous programming, and a willingness to book self-distributed films, has garnered Enzian a national reputation as a trendsetting venue. Time and time again, Enzian has proven that even in a community as mainstream as Orlando, there is an audience hungry for new voices in independent film.

Hulopoe Beach at Manele Bay is a gorgeous white sand beach with some of Hawaii’s best snorkeling. And it is a lovely day trip from Maui. The Maui-Lanai Ferry departs and returns three times a day from Lahaina to Lanai (Hulopoe Beach is a 15-20 minute walk from the piers). During peak times and busy seasons you will need to buy your ferry tickets at least the day before your visit. Hulopoe is a massive and beautiful white sand beach, that due to it’s secluded location is one of the less frequented beaches you can visit in Hawaii. It also has lots of conveniences such as two rest rooms, multiple beach showers, picnic benches at the back of the beach and in the nearby park and camp grounds, beautiful trees offering shaded areas, and some of the best snorkeling on the Hawaiian Islands that you can reach without a private boat. And if you are camping, they even offer a few campsites just a couple hundred meters / yards away from this idyllic beach. Bring your own Food: They have a basic store at the dock at Lanai, but it is probably best to plan on brining food for the day with you. They have plenty of “relatively” inexpensive and vegan friendly groceries and restaurants in Lahaina. The Four Seasons Resort Lanai: The restaurant at The Four Seasons Resort Lanai does offer a few vegan meal and appetizer options, but unless you are prepared to pay a minimum of $30 per person for lunch at the resort (not counting drinks or appetizers), we suggest bringing your own food with you. But the resort is gorgeous and does have the best view of Hulopoe Beach and Manele Bay, so it is still well worth taking the walk up there.

Isolated in the mid Pacific, the Hawaiian Islands are the most remote major island group on Earth. They were formed as the Pacific Plate moved across a volcanic “hot spot” within the earth’s mantle. Lying 2,400 miles (3,862 km) from the nearest continent, they have never had connection to any other land mass. Natural crossings across this great expanse of ocean by animals and plants were extremely rare and very surprising occasions. After such accidental arrivals, and isolated from mainland populations, these pioneer organisms took strange courses of evolution and allowed a unique biota to develop. Unaccustomed to mainland competition, however, these remote native island ecosystems are defenseless against mainland alien species, and have been decimated by new grazers, predators and diseases. Haleakalā National Park, and its East Maui Watershed Partner neighbors, still harbor an astonishing relict of these native island ecosystems. The major effort of Haleakalā’s resource stewardship is to preserve intact this superb example of the Hawaiian Islands’ native ecosystems.
