Chiang Mai Animal Sanctuaries, Rescues, and Shelters
While we vegans all wish there wasn’t a need for animal sanctuaries, we are truly grateful for the compassionate work being done by so many people around the world to help animals in need. The animal sanctuaries, rescue centers, and shelters shown on this page are sorted based on reviews from your fellow vegans worldwide, and many are well worth your support. If you’re able to, consider visiting one or more of these animal care facilities, whether they are near home for you or if you happen upon one while you are traveling abroad.
Our goal is to provide a platform that truly respects and mirrors our collective vegan opinions and perspectives. As our global vegan community adds additional animal sanctuaries and care facilities, and as we review and rate our favorites, the resulting listings will continuously, and more accurately, reflect our favorite animal sanctuaries.
Our vegan community’s favorite Animal Sanctuaries in Chiang Mai
Founded by Sanguden “Lek” Chailert and her partner, Elephant Nature Park is a unique conservation project set in the Chiang Mai Province in Northern Thailand. The park is dedicated to providing a sanctuary for former captive working elephants, as well as other animals.
The park aims to protect and encourage a natural existence for elephants and other animals that have been innocent victims of abuse and exploitation. Volunteers and visitors can help heal the scars.
We offer day and overnight visits.
BEES – Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary is a home for old, injured and retired elephants needing rest and/or permenant care. At BEES we give elephants a chance to live free and to just be elephants.
BEES provide an alternative for elephants and their owners to move away from the busy city life and hardships of trekking by providing a retirement home for elephants and a place were elephants can live free and have a good rest in a natural environment.
BEES works to raise awareness and to join many others in the hope to bring an end to the suffering and exploitation of the elephants. There are over 4,000 registered captive elephants in Thailand that suffer everyday in the tourism industry being used for entertainment and trekking. Little do the tourists know that the $$$ are funding the continued exploitation and ultimately the suffering of these beautiful and majestic creatures.
Located just 2.5hrs drive South-West of Chiang Mai, amongst beautiful mountain scenery and lush countryside, BEES is a local family and community based project. Situated in a valley in Maechaem, we have breath taking views of Doi Inthanon the highest mountain in Thailand.
This is a place where you might just find yourself lost in the moment. Experience elephants in a natural environment that stimulates their inherent wild behaviors…. Something well deserved as these elephants have spent their entire lives in the logging or tourism trekking industry before finally arriving at BEES.
Join our Volunteer Program or short stay guest programs, experience living the Thai way in our unique traditional Thai style rooms (a mattress and mosquito net on the floor), enjoy refreshing cold showers after a warm days work and be rewarded by the sight of these beautiful creatures getting a better life. Get up close and personal and learn about elephants from a different perspective and help us bring an end to the abuse and exploitation of these majestic creatures.
The Care for Dogs Objectives are:
++Reducing the overpopulation of street and temple dogs through sterilization /spaying programs and local adoptions.
++Operating a rescue centre for puppies and dogs (which is used for adoptions, after-care from surgery/sterilisation, or for transitional rescue for dogs that are in immediate danger).
++Improving the health status of homeless dogs through vaccinations and coordinating medical care in cooperation with our veterinary team.
++Fighting the dog meat trade through advocacy and education.
Care for Doga helps people help their dogs through:
++Cooperation with monks and employees of temples to improve the quality of life for temple dogs.
++Information to dog owners about sterilisations, medical care, taking them along with us to the vet, showing people how to show affection through gentle play and petting.
++Reducing death rate by helping people understand that there are solutions other than killing dogs.
++School education activities to make the younger generation more aware of animal welfare.
Although we concentrate mainly on dogs, we are able to facilitate treatment and sterilisations for cats as well as liaising with nuns at temples who foster kittens and adult cats if people are interested in adoption.
We are a nonprofit group of people whose aim is to prevent cruelty, promote kindness and alleviate the suffering of cats and dogs in Chiang Mai.
Our main activity is sterilisation in order to reduce the numbers of unwanted puppies and kittens, giving the sterilised animal the chance of a longer healthier life. We educate people as to why sterilisation and vaccination are good for their pet.
One of the main reasons dogs and cats don’t receive medical care is that vet costs are extremely high in proportion to the national average wage and very many people find that they simply can’t afford vet care. We help to bridge this gap for them.
We work in Temples and local communities to find workable solutions to dog and cat related problems and, where possible (and safe), arrange for the animal to stay in its home environment. When this isn’t possible, we remove the dog or cat to the safety of our shelter where we offer a life time home if necessary. All of our cats and dogs are available for adoption. We welcome visits to our shelters.
