Guys! I’m in Quebec City for only two days and I need to try maple taffy before I go! But I heard that it’s not always vegan and I don’t really have time to go looking for specific companies and contacting them directly to find out so can anyone tell me where’s good for vegan maple taffy preferably in the city centre?

    • Maybe either @codyk or @margare7 could provide some suggestions?

    • Hey Gillian,

Maple syrup taffy, or tire d’érable, is just boiled maple syrup poured over snow. Is there another kind I am not aware of?

    • Hey Gillian,
Ive never been to Quebec but recently just went to a maple syrup farm here in Ontario. Like Cody mentioned, maple syrup taffy is usually maple syrup boiled to a certain degree and poured on snow, These treat are usually eaten when served. Are you perhaps referring to maple fudge? if so then that is not vegan. If you want to take a delicious maple treat home, you can pick up maple candies and my favorite maple butter (which you can eat off a spoon or put it on toast for breakfast!).

    • I heard that maple syrup is traditionally prepared with animal fat to prevent foaming, it’s rare now but apparently it still happens:

It would be quite unlikely to be the case with the average maple taffy place but just want to be sure…

      • Thank you so much for sharing that @gee0dee

I would recommend finding out which syrups are vegan and just ask when you are there. If it is a rare thing now, then they may be using a kosher maple syrup. *fingers crossed* Hope you enjoy your time in Quebec.

      • yes thanks for sharing. @Gillian

    • I can hardly find any info online as to which specific brands are vegan which is why I thought I’d try asking here but got something maple-flavoured from a vegan store so I guess that’s as close as I’m gonna get. Oh well, off to Washington DC tomorrow!
