The Bonnington Café is a co-operatively run vegetarian and vegan restaurant in the Bonnington Square Community Centre in the heart of Vauxhall. One of South London’s best-kept secrets tucked amidst the beautiful community gardens of the square, the Café has been open since the early 80’s when it was started as a squat Café to provide a good cheap meal for the community. Much has changed in the years since we opened, but not the sense of community. No single person runs the restaurant, rather it’s maintained by an active collective of member cooks who also contribute to the overall running of the venue and who are still committed to providing excellent vegetarian home-cooking at great prices in a laid back and friendly bohemian atmosphere. Some history Initially the café wasn’t open to the public. It was an eating place run by squatters for squatters, because the local houses were in such a bad state and didn’t have gas or electricity or sometimes even water. It was a communal space where food could be made for people from the community, and if they had nothing they paid nothing, or whatever they could afford. At the very beginning people would go to the market at New Covent Garden and pick up the throw-away vegetables. It didn’t really cost anything, but was still perfectly good food that was just thrown away in our wasteful society. From squat to community centre By the mid-80s, many of the squatters had moved and so there was less need for a squatters’ kitchen. One of the squatters who had lived upstairs turned the building into a community centre. It was decided to turn the kitchen into a café, but still to keep it as a communal space for both cooking and eating. Because it is a very popular café there is always a lot of pressure to go upmarket, but we don’t want to and we aim to keep prices low – we always keep the room slightly bohemian. That might be off-putting to some people who think ‘Oh God there are holes in the floor’ or something like that. But it is deliberate; we want to keep the café as an affordable place within a thriving community. A different chef every night The café is run on a co-operative basis. That means that people are members and every day of the week somebody different cooks. There are blessings in that, but there are problems as well. If someone forgets that it is their night to cook, then the café is shut. That has happened many times (in the past). The nice thing is that there is a huge variety. Each person that cooks has the responsibility to pay rent to the community centre and also to put something in the café kitty to replace things like plates and pots. After that, whatever they make is theirs to keep. The cook is responsible for buying the food, preparing and serving it, and cleaning up at the end of the day.A community-friendly place We have monthly meetings where we talk about the maintenance of the café, how we might want to develop in the future and any other issues, like complaints or requests to put on exhibitions, fundraisers, events and now as a “food hub” with more focus social enterprise. Cuisine from around the world The philosophy behind the café is to have a community-friendly place where people can come in, sit down and meet people. It is also a place for people who like to cook vegetarian food to be able to do it without the risk and investment involved in opening a café of their own. We want to have as many different cuisines as possible, so we have people from Japan cooking here, people from Malaysia, China, Greece, Italy, and France. There is a huge variety of food. Many make an effort to use local produce, such as from allotments, farmers markets and UK farms. Everyone though has a different angle so while some focus on seasonal food and organic, others focus on raw foods and for some its all about exotic ingredients from around the globe. As a different person cooks each night the atmosphere changes from day to day. Sometimes there is live music. Traditionally musicians have gathered here, brought along their instruments, and just jammed and we’ve had cabaret performance, spoken work nights… were always keen on new ideas! Just to add that although and inevitably there have been ups and downs, the café is more popular now than it ever was. And that’s testament to its history, the community it sits in, the cooks and all our friends who eat there!

The Gate has 3 branches in London now, all with a great atmosphere. Plenty of vegan options in a modern, and relaxed setting. The Angel branch is bigger and has a cute fire place, perfect for dates and special celebrations, or just a nice lunch spot. The decor is made out of lots of organic materials such as wood, plenty of flowers and plants can be seen throughout the restaurants, and the service is very pleasant. The menu is ever-evolving but some of my all-time favourites are the miso glazed aubergine (so rich in flavour and totally delicious), Couliflower as a side which comes with tahini dressing and some pomegranate seeds and you must try the Tortillas as a main, you can make them vegan without the goats cheese! Tortilla’s come with two fillings of sweet potato, sweetcorn, chilli, lime and coriander; and the other one was of baked beetroot, parsley, served with guacamole and black bean pepper salsa – oh wow, they were something else, but the sweet potato one was terrific. Overall I enjoyed my experience and would be back to try more dishes, as the menu is always changing. Great place to go for carnivores who are opened to trying vegetarian and vegan cuisines.

In March 2012 the Coach became London’s first and only vegetarian and vegan pub. This approach to food was introduced by the landlord Alastair Choat who had been mulling over this significant change for over a year before he finally took the plunge. ‘There are a whole host of reasons for this change’ said Alastair, ‘ But in the main it reflects my belief that we need to be more sustainable in our approach to food, more responsible with the waste we produce, more aware of the welfare of our planet and be more able to reflect on the enormity of mass farming and slaughter of animals. There are of course significant health benefits to eating a more varied vegetarian diet and reducing or cutting out meat completely. However, the Coach is not there to preach but to offer customers a whole new reason to not only go to the pub but also a different way of eating when you are there. The food is simple traditional fare which includes such favourites as Tofush and Chips (vegan), Welsh Rarebit, Beetroot Ravioli and our vegetarian pies. Our food is seasonal and freshly prepared from fresh ingredients. We will be looking to continuously evolve our menu and are looking to embrace some of the amazing vegetarian and vegan dishes that are widely available throughout Europe. Changing our pub food to vegetarian and vegan has been a great success and we have seen a whole new customer base visiting the pub on a regular basis.

Why are alternative, more natural methods of cure and prevention regaining popularity in modern society? For thousands of years the medicinal value of plants and food (food as medicine) has been appreciated in Far Eastern tradition. What you eat not only affects your day-to-day health but also helps to determine the quality of your life. Moreover the Itadaki-zener believes that food is closely related to human consciousness as well as human body. Itadaki means ‘to take the food life’; Zen means ‘to fix, to mend’. The primary end of the Itadaki-zen cuisine is not merely an agreeable taste, but its healing qualities. The Itadaki-zen restaurant was born from the need to provide those who are strong advocates of taking responsibility for their own health and preventing as much illness as possible with a source of food as medicine. In Itadaki-zen cuisine it is essential to eat a good balance of grains, vegetables and seaweeds. This will enable you to build a balance, healthy and slim body. Rice, root vegetables, seaweeds, soya beans and by-products, are recurrent ingredients in our cuisine because deemed to be essential for a sanitary and strong metabolism.“Slow food” characterizes the cuisine preparation, reflecting appreciation and care in the making of each dish. Anyone who ever thought that vegan meals were dull will be proved wrong by these dishes. And the restaurant desires to be a cultural place made both of sharing and personal experience with food, Art and people. Cross cultural artistic events are held periodically, such as art exhibitions and live music. Free workshops are organize regularly, focusing on food and agriculture and all the craftsmanship around it (traditional products elaboration, cuisine, etc). Let us know if you would like to participate to our free workshops or artistic events!

“Carnevale is tiny but chic, so smart that a good number of diners never realise it is a vegetarian restaurant. Cooking capable of excellence, such as heart celeriac and horseradish soup or a spicy risotto with dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts.” – The Independent
