Veg Out is one of the few cafes or restaurants in Kyoto where vegans and vegetarians can enjoy a healthy meal in line with their lifestyle. This slow, airy vegetarian cafe on the banks of the Kamogawa River was born with the aim of providing our customers with a space in which you can experience simple pleasures in mind, body, and spirit. We have also had a bit of fun with the naming of Veg Out: the combination of an abundance of local, organic vegetables deliciously prepared which you can enjoy to your heart’s desire, and “veg out” style relaxation—losing yourself in the sound of the river, the play of clouds and the open sky, and the majestic views of the Higashiyama mountains of eastern Kyoto. In the midst of the plethora of diet information and food choices in modern society, Veg Out also seeks to provide newcomers with an introduction to the simple beauty and happiness associated with the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle. In other words, everyone who enjoys fresh, delicious food is welcome! For those of us living in the modern world, it is easy to forget our connection to the soil and to the green earth, and the unchanging truth that we as humans are an intricate part of Nature, and we all are part of the great Wheel of Existence. One of the basic tenets of Buddhism is the concept that everything has Buddha-nature: everything is connected. Therefore we humans, for our long-term health and well-being, must put ourselves in accord with the natural environment, and put into our bodies foods closest to their natural state. Consequently, we have made exclusive contracts with local farmers who share our philosophy and have put great care into the cultivation of the plants and grains they supply to us. We also invite the ‘vegetable connoisseurs’ among you to try some of the local heirloom vegetables (called “Kyo-yasai”, with a thousand-year history) that we have on our menu. From all the staff of Veg Out to all of our valued customers, we express our “kansha”, or gratitude, for you with each and every dish we prepare with all our heart.
