Australia Animal Sanctuaries, Rescues, and Shelters
While we vegans all wish there wasn’t a need for animal sanctuaries, we are truly grateful for the compassionate work being done by so many people around the world to help animals in need. The animal sanctuaries, rescue centers, and shelters shown on this page are sorted based on reviews from your fellow vegans worldwide, and many are well worth your support. If you’re able to, consider visiting one or more of these animal care facilities, whether they are near home for you or if you happen upon one while you are traveling abroad.
Our goal is to provide a platform that truly respects and mirrors our collective vegan opinions and perspectives. As our global vegan community adds additional animal sanctuaries and care facilities, and as we review and rate our favorites, the resulting listings will continuously, and more accurately, reflect our favorite animal sanctuaries.

“If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others… why wouldn’t we?”
Edgar’s Mission is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to create a humane and just world for humans and non-humans. We endeavour to achieve this by education, advocacy and empowerment.
Our farm sanctuary currently provides life-long love and care to over 250 rescued animals.
Edgar’s Mission was founded by Pam Ahern and named after her first rescued pig, Edgar. Edgar Alan Pig, aka “the pig who started it all” sadly passed away shortly after his 7th birthday party in April 2010. Edgar, a gentle giant, touched so many people and was an amazing ambassador for pigs and farm animals everywhere. He will be missed beyond words – but his mission will continue.
Wirrimbirra Flora & Fauna Sanctuary in Bargo, NSW was established in 1963 by Thistle Stead, in memory of her husband David Stead. We are a non-profit organisation entirely run by volunteers who are dedicated to the preservation and conservation of Australia’s unique flora and fauna. We depend on the kind donations from the public to continue caring for these animals.
The animals at Wirrimbirra are generally semi-friendly to people, but they are not trained by the volunteers, nor do we encourage hand feeding. We have marsupials like a Common Wombat, two Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Swamp Wallabies, we also have two Emus. There are a few bird aviaries that house a range of birds like Parrots, Cockatoos and two Tawny Frogmouths.
The Wirrimbirra native plant nursery is one of the few nurseries in the shire dedicated totally to Australian native plants which are for sale to the public. We also have bush tucker gardens and a bush walk trail for both bush walkers and bird spotters.
