PRO TIP for New Zealand travel —-> I was lamenting my minimal budget for gallivanting around New Zealand when a local filled me in on a little secret about the rental cars here. *Apparently* most vacationers will rent a car from Auckland and drive it down south, and often down into the South Island (to visit popular destinations like Queenstown and Christchurch).

These rental companies then have to pay big haul companies to ship their cars back to Auckland again. However, if you can get yourself down to one of these big cities in the South Island you can often rent one of these vehicles super cheap as it saves them loads of money to have a random person drive it back north rather than paying for it being transported by a big company.

It totally works! I just used this website: transfercar.co.nz to book a small camper van for FIVE (5!!) FREE days! I then paid $30 per day for 2 extra days. In totally I’ll have the van for 6 days for $60. The rental place covers the car insurance and I pay for gas. Amazing, right?!

I’ll let you know how it goes once I’ve actually done it, but it sounds pretty amazing and I’ve only heard good things from the locals! 🙂

    • They have a similar thing in Australia… they’ll give you a free flight up to Cairns/the Gold Coast if you rent a van on ththe way back.
